Kaelan Varros has been a fun character to write. He can be moody, witty, and pessimistic, but ultimately he's got a good heart and once you've earned his trust and loyalty, he's there for you no matter what.
Kaelan is the bastard child of Lord Ayduin Vaelthir, one of the nine Lords that make up the ruling body of the Aeltherian Dominion. He grew up in the manor, but was never treated like an heir, or even a full elf. His mother, a human, served Lord Vaelthir as a servant, coming to the Manor once Lord Vaelthir realized she was with child.
Kaelan quickly made friends with Aenara Elaerion, the scion of House Elaerion. They were nearly inseparable and most of the serving staff thought that Kaelan and Aenara would end up married.
Kaelan joined the Dominion military and went to the Academy to become an officer at age 20. He graduated with honors, commissioning as a lieutenant and rapidly rising through the ranks, eventually become Lord Commander of the Knights of the Silver Moon.
Author's thoughts: Kaelan Varros came to mind when I was actually planning to join a friend's Dungeons and Dragons group. I wanted to play a character who was disciplined, pessimistic, but generally a pretty good dude. When I was in high school, my best friend, Samantha, and I had a relationship that mirrored the relationship of Kaelan and Aenara that you're going to see in The Crystal Raven. Kaelan has been a lot of fun to write and it's interesting to get to experience this world that I've built through his eyes.
